Types of Commercial Water Heaters
It doesn’t matter which business sector you belong to, your premises will always need a water heater. Many organizations, especially the hospitality and food service sectors, need a steady, hot water supply to meet their daily business requirements. The need for hot water is not any less vital for standard offices as well.

Depending on various factors such as how much hot water you need to run your business, how quickly you want the water heat up, etc., there are multiple commercial water heater options you can choose from. It certainly is not easy to determine what type of water heater you should go for. As there are so many commercial water heater options available, you need to know what type and size of water heater to choose, and without the help of professionals it becomes difficult to choose the right type. This write-up will point you in the right direction, though you can always seek help from your professionals.

Types of Commercial Water Heaters
Oil-Fired Water Heaters: This type of water heaters are well suited for mid-sized commercial use. Oil-fired water heaters range in storage capacity from 110 - 1000 liters. There are other dual-fuel models which range upwards to about 2100 liters that is why there are ideal for mid-sized as well as large-sized industrial uses. Oil-fired water heaters provide stable, cost-efficient, and quick hot water supply for businesses, which ultimately adds value and increases efficiency.

Gas Water Heaters: This type of water heaters use natural gas or propane to heat water. They operate using a burner at the bottom of the hot water tank. To release water vapor and CO2, they require a venting chimney which may not be ideal for various commercial spaces. Gas water heaters are more expensive than electric water heaters but they are more energy efficient and the cost of gas is cheaper.

Electric Water Heaters: These are widely used for residences. They heat water and maintain it at a pre-set temperature. They are not as efficient as other water heaters such as oil-fired and gas water heaters. On the other hand, electricity costs are more expensive than gas or oil. The buying cost of an electric water heater is quite low. They do not require any kind of venting, which may be a benefit for your application. Electric water heaters are ideal if your hot water demands are not high.

Solar Water Heaters: As the name suggests, these water heaters make use of the sun’s heat to produce hot water. Solar panels are usually placed on the roof to absorb the sun’s heat. The tubes that are present within the panels either heat the water directly, or heats a transfer fluid which warms a heat ex-changer which then heats the water in the storage tank.

Storage Tank Water Heaters: Storage type water heaters are commonly used in both commercial as well as residential operations. These water heaters feature a storage unit with heating workings that keep warm water readily available for use.

Tankless Water Heaters: Tankless water heaters heat water only on demand or when used. Unlike the storage type, they don’t heat water and store in the tank for later use. This simply means they are more efficient as you only heat and use as much water as you need.

You will certainly get a good idea as to which water heater is more appropriate for your commercial applications. Our professional water heater installers are always ready to help and provide necessary insights that you may need before choosing the right type of water heater.

Types of Water Heaters
Is your water heater not working efficiently? Perhaps that’s why you’re looking for different types of water heaters, to see which one suits your needs better. If you haven’t replaced your water heater for many years, here’s a small guide that can help you learn about the different types of water heaters.

Indirect Water Heaters
Indirect water heaters use a boiler to heat both your water and living space. They are highly efficient and have higher heating capacity in general. They are more expensive than the traditional ones, however, most of them come with a lifetime warranty as they are made of stainless steel. This type of water heaters are ideal for large homes and hot tubs, and also for condos as it reduces the number of appliances and saves space. Additionally, indirect water heaters require less maintenance compared to the other water heater types.

Tankless Water Heaters
This type of water heater is exclusively made for homes and businesses where space is limited. They work on demand, which means the pilot light ignites only when there is a need for hot water. Tankless water heaters can be used as a solo hot water source or you can add them to your traditional water heating system.

Storage Tank Water Heaters

These are the most commonly used water heaters. There is a storage tank which can hold up to 70 to 350 liters of water which is enough for one person and a family of 5 to 6 people. The latest models we get today are energy-efficient featuring extra insulation, which reduces heat loss through the tank walls. Most storage type water heaters are steel lined with glass, while there some high-end models which are lined with a steel core wire to prevent corrosion. They are a good option if you receive acidic water or high mineral content.

Solar Water Heaters
The sun is a free and limitless source of energy, and solar water heaters are powered by the sunlight. This type of water heaters has two essential components - a solar collector and an insulated storage tank. It’s best to install the solar collector on the roof because that is the only place where you get maximum exposure to sunlight. There are two different kinds of solar water heaters - one is referred to as an active solar water heater and the other one is a passive solar water heater. The active solar water heater distributes water by means of a water pump, while the passive model relies on the force of gravity and not on man-made mechanisms.

This goes without saying that each of these types requires maintenance, although the amount of maintenance required for each differs. Which is why it’s important to first learn a little about the different types of water heaters and then determine how much you can spend. But obviously, it’s always best to seek help from professional water heater installers who can clearly tell you why should select a certain type of water heater for your home.

Water heater maintenance can be done easily, by anyone and everyone. A regular inspection and maintenance can help your water heater to survive for many years. Here are some ways how you can extend the life of your water heater.

Change the Anode
Check the anode rod made of magnesium or aluminum every 9-10 months. This rod is responsible for preventing the water tank from corroding. Replace this anode rod when you start seeing the internal core steel wire. If you have hard water supply in your area, check the rod more often.

Drain and Flush the Tank
Over time, debris, minerals, and other sediments develop on the bottom and walls of the tank. Every three months, drain the hot water tank. Flush the tank with gallons of water to remove the buildups. These sediment buildups can lead to internal corrosion and overheating of the tank.

Install Water Softener
If you obtain hard water that has a high concentration of minerals, install a water softener. This device will protect your water heater and other plumbing systems and fixtures from getting corroded. This will reduce the chances of sediment buildups too.

Check the TPR Valve
The temperature-pressure relief valve releases excess temperature and pressure inside the tank by releasing water from it. Excess pressure can result in pipe and tank ruptures or leaks. Check this valve every couple of years to ensure that it is working efficiently. Turn the key several times to see if it is moving smoothly. If not, fix it. Consider replacing it if the valve is too old.

Install Expansion Tank
An expansion tank holds expanded hot water that the water tank cannot hold. This way, expansion tank prevents the water heater from rupturing due to thermal expansion of water. Install it to lower down the chances of water heater damages.

Insulate the Tank
Insulate the water heater tank by wrapping tank blanket on the outer surface. This keeps the water hot for a longer time and reduces heating bills. This way, it reduces the frequent use of the tank, thus decreasing the damage.

Check the Venting System
For gas water heaters, check the venting system every three months. Check and make sure there is no damage or obstruction in the system, vent pipe, and air supply. Do the inspection every three months. Replace the damaged or corroded part of the system to facilitate easy flow of air and heat.

Carry Out an Annual Inspection
Call a professional plumber for a thorough annual water heater inspection. This will help them to identify the hidden defects that can lead to bigger, severe tank problems. Fix the minor defects before they get worse and affect the lifespan of your water heater.

By following these maintenance steps, you can extend the life of your water heater. But, even the best maintenance cannot prevent a water heater from failing. Every hot water tank will need repairs and replacement sooner or later. You can get in touch with our professional water heater installers whenever you face an issue related to your water heater.

Do you feel that your water heater is hotter than it should be? A hot outer surface of water heater is a clear sign that it is wasting power. This can be prevented by insulating your hot water tank. Insulating hot water tanks saves 4%-9% of water heating bills. Modern tanks are generally pre-insulated but, the older tanks have an outdated insulation that requires an external blanket jacket. Choose a tank blanket with the R-value of 11 or more. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation.

Insulating hot water tank is an inexpensive and easy DIY project. Follow these easy steps to insulate it and start saving money.
  • Tank blanket kits are easily available in the market. These kits contain a blanket finished with white vinyl on the outside and raw insulating material on the inside, and vinyl tapes to secure the blanket. Purchase one based on your water heater tank size.
  • Turn off the main power supply to the hot water tank.
  • For electric heaters, turn off the breaker in the electric panel. For gas water heaters, turn the gas valve to the "Pilot" position.
  • Clean the outer surface of the tank. Remove the stains and debris deposits if any.
  • Measure the height of the water heater.
  • Cut the blanket with about 12 inches of extra height.
  • Wrap the blanket around the water tank. Leave the top of the heater open to vent out excessive heat inside the tank.
  • Temporarily secure the blanket using the vinyl tape. Tape the extra part of the blanket on top of the water heater.
  • Using a pen or a marker, mark the areas that need to be cut out. Mark where the thermostat and water connections are. For electric heaters, mark above the two element panels. For gas heaters, mark an arch-shape around the gas valve and burner.
  • Remove the blanket and carefully cut these markings.
  • Now, line up the cut out areas on the heater components and tape it permanently.
  • Turn on the power supply.
  • Don’t set the thermostat above 130°F for the electric heater. The wiring may overheat and get damaged above this temperature.

The hot water accumulated inside can lose heat quickly if the tank is inefficiently insulated. This way, the water heater will consume more energy to reheat the water and result in power wastage. Avoid this with the help of professional water heater installers at Hot Water tanks Edmonton. They will help you in making your water heater efficient and share more ways to save energy and money in your home.

How to Fix a Water Heater Drain Valve?

12/30/2016

Picture
Flushing out water from a water heater on a regular basis is an important part of basic water heater maintenance. Certain repairs that you might need to do on the water heater can only be done if you drain the tank. A water heater drain valve is responsible for draining the water heater. But unfortunately, it sometimes fails to do its job due to various reasons and one of the reasons could be improper maintenance. A drain valve can often stop releasing water properly or start leaking when not maintained. Take a look at the causes of drain valve leaks.

Causes of Leaky Water Heater Drain Valve:
  • Poor or damaged fitting and adhesives
  • Debris or mineral deposits under the drain valve washer
  • Pressure above 80psi in the tank
  • Cracked drain valve in case of plastic drain valves

If you observe leakages from the bottom of the water heater, it’s time you replace it. If your water heater drain valve is giving troubles, here is a step-by-step method of replacing it.

Fix Water Heater Drain Valve
  • Switch off the main power supply if you have an electric water heater, or turn off the gas supply if you have a gas water heater.
  • Shut-off the cold water supply to the heater.
  • Open the temperature-pressure relief valve to relieve the pressure inside the tank.
  • Allow the water inside the tank to cool down. Once done, open the water heater drain valve and drain out all the water. Do not close temperature-pressure relief valve even after the water has drained out.
  • Now, carefully remove the drain valve using a suitable wrench. Hold the valve tightly with the wrench and unscrew the drain valve by turning it in the anti-clockwise direction.
  • Clean the hole where the drain valve sits and make it dry.
  • Take a new water heater drain valve of the same dimensions. Wind enough Teflon tape on the threads of the valve.
  • Screw this new valve in place by turning it in the clockwise direction. Tighten the newly installed drain valve with the help of a wrench.
  • Close the temperature-pressure relief valve and start the cold water supply to the water heater.
  • Turn the gas or electricity on, and refill the water heater tank.
  • Now open one of the hot water faucets in your home and check if the new valve is working properly.

The water heater drain valves that come with the water heaters from the manufacturers are made of plastic and are not very durable. Following these same steps, you can replace the plastic valve with a brass drain valve that is easily available in the hardware stores. But, take up this replacing process only if you have enough experience and knowledge about the same. If you hardly know a thing about water heaters, take help from the professional water heater installers.

It is better to consult a professional rather than trying things on your own and making the situation worse. Hot Water Tanks Edmonton professionals will be there for any water heater related issues.

How to Replace a Water Heater Expansion Tank?

12/15/2016

Picture
Water increases the pressure inside a water heater tank if it does not get enough room to expand when heated.  If this pressure gets too high, it can damage valves and joints of the plumbing system and even the water heater itself. Water heater expansion tanks are installed on the water supply pipe to deal with water thermal expansion and prevent the water from reaching extreme temperatures. Replacing an inefficient water heater expansion tank can be done easily only if you have thorough knowledge and experience, and the correct tools. Below is a step-by-step method of replacing water heater expansion tank.

  • Measure the dimensions and power of the water heater expansion tank and purchase a new one same as your existing one.
  • To start with the process first turn off the water supply by closing the shut-off valve.
  • Switch off the main power supply to the entire water heater setup.
  • Make sure that the water heater is cool and drain out the accumulated water from the tank. It is not necessary to completely drain the water heater, but just enough to eliminate the water pressure.
  • Using appropriate wrenches and pliers disconnect and remove the water heater expansion tank carefully. See to it that no pipes or other parts of the system are damaged while doing this.
  • Now, wrap a Teflon tape around the ends of the connectors tightly, leaving first 2-3 threads bare.
  • Carefully screw and install the new water heater expansion tank in the same position as the old one. Make sure all the new connections are tight and secured.
  • Attach a bicycle tire pump to the Schrader valve at the bottom of the tank. Check the pressure with a pressure gauge and fill the tank with recommended amount of air pressure (generally between 12-15 psi). Regulate the pressure level with the help of a pressure gauge.
  • Turn on all the water supply and power valves and switches.
  • Check for any leaks and tighten the connections if needed.
  • Open a faucet and let the water run through the pipes again.

You can carry out this replacement process on your own. But, a lack of experience can be dangerous for you and your water heater system. Hence, Hot Water Tanks Edmonton professionals always advise that you seek help from professional water heater installers. We have a group of skilled professionals who can deal with any water heater related issues and give you essential tips to maintain them.

How a Storage Water Heater Works?

12/13/2016

Picture
Planning to buy a new hot water tank? Or just curious to know how the storage water heater installed in your house works?

Standard storage water heaters or tank water heaters come in two variants, electric and gas. Both the types convert energy into heat and transfer that heat to water. This is how hot water is supplied to all the faucets and appliances in a house. This article explains how a gas storage water heater works.

Working of a Gas Storage Water Heater:
  • A Gas storage water heater uses fuel, specifically propane or natural gas, which is why it is less expensive than the electric variant.
  • This storage water heater has a gas burner which is mainly responsible for heating water.
  • Thermostat detects the temperature of the water in the tank and gas valve regulates the amount of fuel supply to the gas burner. Natural or propane gas is piped to this gas valve. The burner is ignited by a pilot light or spark ignition.
  • All the unnecessary and toxic emissions from the burner are collected by the flue baffle and it flows through the flue tube, connected to the vent pipe. The vent pipe forces the emissions up through the tank, at the top, and normally up through the roof. Many latest technology storage water heaters have fans assisting this vent so that emissions can be piped out through the walls. This mechanism acts like a chimney for the hot water tanks.
  • A drain valve is located near the base of the tank, on the exterior part. This valve is used to empty the tank or flush the sediments out of it.
  • A tube extends down inside the water heater tank. Hot water exits from this tube through the hot water outlet because the tank is always under high pressure.
  • Cold water enters the tank through the cold water inlet or diffuser dip when hot water exits from it. This cold water pipe or diffuser dip has a shut off valve outside the tank, at the top.
  • An anode rod made of magnesium or aluminum is placed inside the tank. This anode carries out the process of ionization to minimize the water’s corrosive elements that reduce the tank’s shelf life. The larger the anode, the longer the hot water tank survives.
  • The pressure/temperature relief valve is placed on the top of the tank. It opens automatically if the temperature or pressure exceeds the safe limits.
  • Combustion gas openings are vents that remove the combustion gas created in the tank.
  • The entire tank is sealed with a non-flammable, insulating material to reduce standby heat.

A variety of gas storage water tanks is available in the market depending on the size and tank capacity. Take help of our professional water heater installers to select a perfect hot water tank for your house. You can also get in touch with us for the maintenance of your storage water heater.
