How to Turn Off Gas Supply to Your Water Heater?

Gas water heaters have been more popular as they provide hot water usually twice as fast as storage and electric water heaters. Not only this, gas water heaters continue providing hot water even during power-cuts. But, these water heaters don't stay effective and function at their best throughout their shelf lives. Just like other types of water heaters, gas water heaters can stop providing enough hot water, can start leaking from various places, and can make unusual sounds while in use. To find out the actual cause of these water heater defects, it is important to turn off the gas supply, switch off the heater mechanism, and check what's wrong. Turning gas and water supply to the heater will ensure that no harm or mishap takes place during the inspection. It is very easy to turn off the gas supply to the water heater but often many homeowners don't know how to do so. In this article, we have explained the step-by-step method to turn off the gas supply and completely shut down the gas water heater.
  1. Before you start working on your gas water heater, clear the area around the heater. Remove all the clutter and move the items lying around the heater.
  2. Locate the water heater gas valve. It is located towards the bottom of the water heater just above the burner chamber.
  3. You will see three main settings on the valve - 'OFF', 'Pilot' and 'ON'. Turn the dial to ‘Pilot’ setting. shut the gas off to the burner without shutting off the pilot light.
  4. Now locate the gas shut-off valve. Look above, to the side or behind the water heater for the valve. If you are unable to find the valve, follow the gas line that extends from the water heater. You will find the shut-off valve at the end of the gas line.
  5. Some valves have a handle while some have a knob. Turn the handle or the knob until it stops. If you have a handle on your valve, you will notice that the handle is now at the 90° to the gas line.
  6. Now turn off the water supply to the water heater.
  7. Wait for some time to let water inside the tank to cool down.
  8. After 15-20 minutes, drain the water heater. Attach a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank and empty the tank fully.
  9. Loosen the screws on the access panel at the bottom of the water heater, and remove the plastic cover of the panel. Remove the insulation and look inside the water heater.
  10. Make sure you don’t see any blue flame, verifying that the gas supply to the water heater has been disabled.
Once your gas water heater is completely shut, you can call our Edmonton water heater experts to check your heater and find out the cause of the heater problem. Avoid inspecting your gas water heater on your own if you don't have enough knowledge of the heater mechanism. Inexperienced working with gas water heaters can be dangerous and lead to severe mishaps.

Troubleshooting the Gas Water Heater

A gas water heater is one of the most important appliances in your home, but it is often ignored. Like any other appliance, problems can come up if you take it for granted. If you experience water heater problems, you must follow these gas water heater troubleshooting tips.

If There is no Hot Water
  1. Pilot light not ignited - The pilot flame may go off due to several reasons. Check if the pilot is lit. If not, light the pilot so that it lights the burner and produces hot water.
  2. Faulty thermocouple - If you see that the pilot is lit but still you don’t get hot water, it could be due to a faulty thermocouple.  In such a case, the thermocouple cannot sense the pilot flame. Retighten or replace the thermocouple.

If Pilot Light or Burner Goes Off
  1. Partially or entirely turned gas valve - The pilot light and burner won’t stay lit for long or won’t ignite if the adequate amount of gas is not supplied to them. Check if the handle of the gas valve is not moved partially or all the way. This can restrict the gas supply to the pilot and burner.
  2. Clogged or blocked orifices or tube - Clogged, blocked, or dirty tube obstructs the gas supply to the pilot and burner, whereas dirty orifices don’t ignite efficiently. Call professional water heater experts and get the gas tube and orifices cleaned or replaced.
  3. Damaged thermocouple - A faulty or damaged thermocouple will affect the temperature controlling factor. It is best to replace the faulty thermocouple so that the pilot flame and burner can ignite and stay lit.

If You Get Too Hot or Less Hot Water
  1. Thermostat set on too high or low value - The thermostat regulates the water temperature inside the gas water heater. If the thermostat is set at a too high or low value, it will produce very hot or cold water respectively. Check the thermostat reading and set it at 60°C.
  2. Damaged thermostat - Failing thermostat is incapable of maintaining the desired water temperature. Replace the faulty thermostat at the earliest.

If You Get Colored Water
  1. Failing anode - The anode in your water heater is responsible for controlling corrosion and oxidization inside the water heater tank. Faulty or dissolved sacrificial anode fails to do so. Replace the anode every 1-2 years.
  2. Corrosion in the plumbing system or water heater tank - Hard water supply from the main water source can lead to corrosion inside the plumbing system. Replace the corroded plumbing components. Install a water softener to reduce the corrosion in the future.

Leaks from the water heater, slow water reheating, rumbling noise from the tank, and unusual smell from the tank are some other gas
water heater defects. If you suspect any of these problems, it is advisable to call professional water heater repairers rather than ignoring them. Call Hot Water Tanks Edmonton and we will be there to troubleshoot your water heaters.

How to Maintain Your Gas Water Heater?

A hot water heater is a basic necessity and you cannot afford this necessity to fail or become inefficient even for a day. There are several easy and inexpensive ways to increase your water heater's efficiency and life. All you need to do is follow these 7 maintenance tips to keep your gas water heater running perfectly for a longer period.

  • Check the Temperature-Pressure Relief (TPR) Valve
Turn off the gas to extinguish the pilot light and cut-off the cold water supply. Lift the valve lever to release some air (vapor) and water from the TPR valve. If you don’t see anything escaping from the valve, replace the TPR valve. Check this valve annually.

  • Check the Insulation
Check the insulation of the hot and cold water pipes, and the water heater tank. If the insulation is missing or not in good condition, install new ones. Wrap an insulating blanket around the tank. Do not cover the top and bottom part of the gas water heater. Insulate the pipes using the self-sticking 3/8-inch-thick foam insulation that matches the pipes' diameter.

  • Check the Anode Rod
Drain the water heater tank, loosen the hex head screw, and unscrew the anode rod. Replace the sacrificial anode rod if you notice calcium deposits on it or if it is less than ½ inch thick. Inspect the anode every 2-3 years.

  • Drain and Flush the Tank
Drain the remaining water in the water heater tank by attaching a garden hose to the drain valve. Turn on the cold water supply to the gas water heater and let the cold water flush the tank. Continue flushing the tank till clear water runs out of the hose. Repeat this every 7-8 months to keep the sediment buildup at bay.

  • Relight the Gas Water Heater
Check if there is a flame inside the heat access panel. If not, shut off the gas supply valve. Remove the excess gas by blowing gently. Now, turn the gas valve to "On" position and control knob to "Pilot" position. Hold a burner lighter or match stick near the access opening. You will see a small flame.

  • Adjust the Thermostat
Unscrew the cover of the temperature dial at the side of the tank. Using a flathead screwdriver, adjust the temperature dial to 120°F. Close the panel and check the water temperature after one hour. Adjust again if necessary.

  • Check Leaks
Check for drips and leaks from all the connections of the water heater. Check the connection of the drain valve, TPR valve, and water pipes.

These maintenance tips are quite easy to perform, but if you are not comfortable doing them, call our Edmonton professional plumbers. Our experts at Hot Water Tanks Edmonton know how to increase the efficiency and life of any hot water heater, and they’re just a call away.

Why Does The Pilot Light in The Gas Water Heater Keeps Going Off?

10/26/2016

It is very annoying when you want to have a hot water bath and your water heater keeps turning off all on its own. Your gas water heater might go off for various reasons but one of the most common problems could be the pilot light going off. If the pilot light of your gas water heater does not stay lit, you need to fix it as soon as possible.
Here are some reasons why the pilot light in your gas water heater keeps going off:

Dirty Thermocouple

One of the possible reasons why the pilot light in your gas water heater does not stay lit could be a dirty thermocouple. When you have a problem with your gas water heater not lighting, you need to check the pilot light. Then, conduct an inspection to see if the thermocouple is dirty. If you find out that the thermocouple is dirty, you will have to turn off the gas and let the thermocouple cool down. Once it is cool, you should clean it using a fine sandpaper. When you are done cleaning the thermocouple, you need to turn the gas back on and attempt to light the pilot.

Bent Thermocouple

At times, when the pilot light in your gas water heater does not stay lit, you have to check for a bent thermocouple. If the thermocouple is bent far from the pilot light it will prevent the pilot light from heating it. In this case, the thermocouple turns off the supply of gas and keeps the pilot light from lighting. In order to avoid your gas water heater from going out, you will have to bend the thermocouple in a way that it is closer to the pilot light.

Damaged Thermocouple

Another possible reason for the pilot light not staying on could be a damaged thermocouple. In the case of a damaged thermocouple, you cannot conduct any repairs on your own. You will have to call professional plumbers to solve the problem or you will have to get the thermocouple replaced.

Dirty Pilot Tube

Sometimes, the pilot light in your gas water heater might not stay on due to a dirty pilot tube. You will have to turn off the gas and wait for the pilot tube to cool down before you start cleaning it. To clean the pilot tube, you will have to use a needle. With the help of a needle, you will be able to clear out all the blockages present in the pilot tube.

The problem of pilot light in the gas water heater going off is not very serious. You can fix this problem on your own easily but if you have never done any electrical work before, you should consider calling the professional plumbers in Edmonton.
